Vanessa Ganguin Immigration Law | UK Immigration changes for sponsoring employers
Spring has brought a host of UK immigration changes for employers to be aware of. These mainly affect organisations with a licence to sponsor migrants and accompany a rise in enforcement by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).
Changes include:
- Major expansion of right to work checks for employers with a sponsor licence to include any worker they “directly engage”, not just sponsored employees. Most organisations with sponsor licences will not have been carrying out right to work checks on self-employed workers and will be unaware of their status as it has hitherto not been a requirement
- Changes to how pay periods meet minimum salaries for sponsored Skilled Workers
- Mandatory visa refusals for 12-month custodial sentences, even if suspended
- New Youth Mobility Scheme quotas
- Overhaul of asylum seekers’ permission periods and eligible occupations to work in
